Hope changed his name to Bob when classmates ridiculed his English schoolboy name. A highly competitive golfer, he later shot in the 70s and sponsored the Bob Hope Golf Classic, one of the nation's biggest tournaments. He also worked as a caddy and developed a lifelong fondness for golf. The boy helped out by selling newspapers and working in a shoe store, a drug store and a meat market. They found themselves in the backwash of the 1907 depression. The Hopes emigrated to the United States when he was 4 and settled in Cleveland. He was born Leslie Townes Hope on May 29, 1903, in Eltham, England, the fifth of seven sons of a British stonemason and a Welsh singer of light opera. ``He can't believe that this is happening and that he's made it to his Big 100,'' son Kelly Hope said at the time. The fabled intersection of Hollywood Boulevard and Vine Street was renamed Bob Hope Square, and President Bush established the Bob Hope American Patriot Award. On his 100th birthday, he was too frail to take part in public celebrations, but was said to be alert and happy - and overwhelmed by the outpouring of affection. He never let a good joke die - if it got a laugh in Vietnam, it would get a laugh in Saudi Arabia. Hope had a reputation as an ad-libber, but he kept a stable of writers and had filing cabinets full of jokes. So often was Hope away entertaining, and so little did he see his wife, Dolores, and their four adopted children, that he once remarked, ``When I get home these days, my kids think I've been booked on a personal appearance tour.'' He headlined in so many war zones that he had a standard joke for the times he was interrupted by gunfire: ``I wonder which one of my pictures they saw?'' Through he said he was afraid of flying, Hope traveled countless miles to entertain servicemen in field hospitals, jungles and aircraft carriers from France to Berlin to Vietnam to the Persian Gulf. Hope earned a fortune, gave lavishly to charity and was showered with awards, so many that he had to rent a warehouse to store them. Woody Allen called Hope ``the most influential comedian for me.'' He was admired by his peers, and generations of younger comedians. ``You never tire of talking with your best friends.'' ``Audiences are my best friends,'' he liked to say. No matter that the joke was old or flat he was Bob Hope and he got laughs. When Hope went into one of his monologues, it was almost as though the world was conditioned to respond.

Once you remove the land value from the sales price, the home’s depreciated cost remains.Īfter that, you look at how long it took for the home to depreciate with your depreciation percentage, you can find your total economic life.įor most of our readers, you won’t need to do the economic life math on the real estate exam, so don’t worry. That way, you develop a reliable opinion of the property’s value. Once you have a solid set of comparable sales, you deduct the land’s value from each sale’s sales price. With those properties, it’s essential to deduct depreciation or find properties similar without any depreciation. Ideally, the comparables appraisers use should be very similar in terms of age and condition. The most common method is to start by looking for some comparables. There are several ways to find economic life. How Do I Find the Economic Life Remaining Economic Life of My House? Depending on the situation and circumstance, the effective age may be more, less, or the same as the actual age. Effective Age vs Economic LifeĪppraisers take the difference between an economic life of a structure and the remaining economic life of that structure to find its effective age. Again, in that case, the appraiser may use the older age as the effective age. Suppose an appraiser analyzes a property that is 10 years old, but the owner takes poor care of the property it has the condition of a 20-year-old building. In that case, the appraiser may use the 10-year-old age as the property’s effective age. Suppose an appraiser analyzes a structure that is 20 years old, but because the owner kept excellent care of the property, it has the condition of a 10-year-old building. Sometimes actual age is also referred to as the chronological age on the real estate exam. What is Actual Age?Īctual age is pretty self-explanatory actual age is the total years that have passed since a structure was built. Using the effective age, geographic location, comparable properties, real estate market trends, and more, appraisers can accurately determine a fair price for properties. The effective age is one of the many appraisal concepts appraisers use to determine fair market value for a property. What is Effective Age?Įffective age is the age of a property based upon its utility, condition, and physical wear and tear, not its actual age. When an asset or piece of real estate is no longer valuable to its proprietor, it is said to be past its economic life. And that makes sense, right? A rundown mall still exists or has a physical life but no economic life due to something like physical deterioration. What is Economic Life?Įconomic life is the specific amount of time in which a piece of property can be put to profitable use.Įconomic life is usually less than its physical life. In this article, we define economic life, effective age, and actual age and compare the differences in terms. economic life is an essential concept to understand for real estate professionals and appraisers. It can be rather difficult to learn to navigate but you will learn and then it's not bad. The only cons I have about Clip Studio Paint is that it's not the most user-friendly at first. They can also compile my comic to give me a 3D preview which is very helpful when working out placement. There are a few brushes in Clip Studio Paint that are very useful for drawing. I can edit its color, shape, size, font, and other cool effects to it. Comic lettering is the best thing to do because Clip Studio Paint has incredible text tools. The paneling feature creates any kind of panel I need and they exist on their own layer so editing is easy. This is my favorite software to use when creating comics. I've used it to create a few comics and I highly recommend it for other comic creators and digital artists.Ĭlip Studio Paint's best features for me are their Panels/Frames and Text. This is a paid software but it's definitely worth the money. So they really need to work on the interface in the tablet version.Ĭomments: I've had an overall great experience using Clip Studio Paint. Since I have no keyboard for the shortcuts, I need a friendly interface that eases my experience with the touch screen and pencil. Also, when I tried to use it on a tablet, I find it very confusing and way more complex than on a PC. I just really hate that Ipad/Android version has no one-time purchase plan just like the PC. I like how they always develop it and add more amazing features. I've been using it for more than a year now, and every day I discover a new hidden feature that I don't know about earlier. It offers unlimited features that one can't cover all at once. If anyone asks me about drawing apps I suggest Clip Studio at once! The app deserves more than its the actual price, and I'm glad that they offer it at such an accessible price so everyone can get it.įirst of all, I loved how they make it inexpensive, unlike the other drawing apps. Otherwise, I really don't have much to complain about.Ĭomments: My overall experience is excellent. One of the biggest weaknesses is the lack of ability to edit text kerning and allow for that text to follow a path, but I'm hoping this will change in future updates, which this program is always receiving. (the mobile version, however, is subscription.) There is a cloud feature, and the ability to also use the program on mobile. There's a newer feature that records a time-lapse of what is being drawn.ĬSP allows the user to export files in a number of different extensions, including PSD. I cannot say enough good about this program.Ĭustom brushes and assets are drag and drop install and the program comes with a search window to find other custom assets that users have uploaded. Templates for printing, for interactive digital storytelling, animation, comic page layouts, 3D assets to help with the layout of an illustration, vector layers and masking, completely customizable brushes and textures. It has added features that previous programs I worked with didn't have as well.Ĭlip Studio has grown over the years and has become such an amazing program. Lack of custom shapes.Ĭomments: The program is very affordable, it runs fast, and it has pretty much all the features I look for in an art program. Asset store tends to be very slow when browsing. Translations can be a bit of a mouthful at a times. Some asset features are very CPU heavy and can lag on older machines. That takes a lot of licensing hassle for creators and allows them to focus on their art. The asset store is a nice touch, allowing everyone to get additional brushes, patterns, backgrounds and other images for free (or in-program currency), and they're by default allowed for commercial use. Performance of the application is outstanding in comparison to other products of this type this allowed me to increase the canvas size and open files that would usually slow down the other programs. From working exclusively on cartography and digital painting, I have expanded my horizons to dabbling with webtoons and vector illustration, both made extremely easy and user-friendly with this program. Comments: Some of the features CSP offers seemed like a marketing catch, but in the end became part of my pipeline. Result? More money for content and staff expansion, potentially. They helped him with homework and gave him the attention he likely wasn’t receiving at home.” Another positive, hardly a mere detail, is that BiblioTech was built at a cost of several million, which actually is a fraction of what a paper equivalent would have cost. The staff then set up a regimen to read with him at least 30 minutes a day before he could get on the computer or play games. He confided to one of our tech assistants that he wasn’t doing so well in reading. “Santos…did not have the ideal home life, but once BiblioTech opened, he found a safe and welcoming place to come after school. From Judge Wolff, here’s the human side for anyone obtuse enough to think BiblioTech is just parking kids in front of computers. I don’t know what the results for the students and others will be in quantifiable terms, but BiblioTech can hardly hurt, given the well-documented connection between literacy levels and the availability of books and librarians. BiblioTech has also gone out of its way to reach out to the local school district. Especially I like BiblioTech’s forthcoming presence in public housing and ambitions to expand elsewhere without need for scads of bookshelves. Our efforts reached 61,675 family members.” BiblioTech has set up a physical branch in the county court house’s jury room to grow those numbers. “We had 160 community events to engage families in reading. 14, 2013 to “bridge the literacy and technology gaps” in and near San Antonio? “During our first year we had 103,974 on-site visits 31,676 registered patrons 76,659 e-books checked out and 6,464 e-readers circulated,” Judge Wolff writes. Has BiblioTech succeeded since opening on Sept. She was active in the community, providing job training for adults, employment opportunities.” The solution? As branch manager, Judge Wolff hired a Hispanic woman, Catarina Velasquez, program director for the Baptist Child and Family Service’s Guadalupe Street Coffee, “an Internet cafe on the west side of San Antonio that served coffee and community programming and services. Eklof, who, although smart, gung-ho and digital-savvy, came from Wisconsin and did not speak Spanish. Because BiblioTech was such a departure from a traditional library, the judge and colleagues had trouble recruiting a professional librarian from Texas. “And since we would be serving a mostly Hispanic population, the name would reflect their heritage.”Īlong the way, the self-made Judge Wolff shows a deep appreciation of the value of books as life-changers, as well as a deep respect for libraries as community institutions. “BiblioTech,” Judge Wolff writes, “represents books and technology and it is also a play” on bibliotheque, the French word for library, as well as on the Spanish biblioteca. The actual name “BiblioTech” came from one of the architects, Geoff Edwards of the Munoz firm. So BiblioTech replicated not just rows of computers but also bright colors. The judge saw that many of BiblioTech’s biggest fans would be the same people who frequented Apple stores, or hoped to be able to afford to. Judge Wolff helped build a successful chain of health food stores (with a strict ban on outlandish claims of cancer cures, etc.), and the library world could learn from his passion for merchandising and architectural details as well as marketing. Judge Wolff’s e-book, available through Amazon, B&N, Kobo and iTunes/iBooks, isn’t just a BiblioTech history with generous credit to such people as Administrator Laura Cole and Librarian Ashley Eklof. Significantly, Judge Wolff and his wife, Tracy, are donors and fund-raisers for BiblioTech and other civic causes. The title is roughly equivalent to the head of a county board. He is judge of Bexar County, which includes the city of San Antonio. Have a large population of minorities or poor people, with many teenagers owning e-book-capable cell phones? Then if you’re a librarian or a local official overseeing the library system, you would be remiss in your duties if you did not read Bexar BiblioTech: The Evolution of the Country’s First All-digital Library, by Nelson Wolff, the visionary behind the country’s first all-digital public library system. Still, the BiblioTech library in Bexar County, Texas, is a landmark achievement worthy of local variants in countless cities in the U.S. The debate rages on, for example, about whether toddlers need paper pages to flip while enjoying the smell and feel. All right–so all-digital libraries are not for every city or every patron right now. His lesson for this 3D model of mandible can be seen on this page as well. Dendrites are very short strands of tissue (around 1.5 mm). Multipolar neurons have a single axon and one or more dendritic branches emerging from all parts of the cell body. Replacing the original Sobotta anatomy atlas with 3D anatomy was a great idea but what about the text books that were explaining the anatomy? 3D Anatomy is not enough to effectively learn anatomy because it lacks information and explanations. That is why Fahrice Dozic created a lesson for every single model in the software, covering the entire human anatomy. Difference between axon and dendrite: Axons are quite lengthy (several metres). Tools also allow the user to create screenshots as well as notes important for his work, exams and lectures. The entire human body and all the organ systems can be easily navigated with tools in our software that allow the user to remove and isolate as well as search for objects that he wants. By 16-18 h APF, all dendritic debris is eliminated. 1.Neurons, 2.Signal reception signal transmission, 3.Dendrites to the cell body to the axon, 4. Dendrites undergo blebbing, thinning, subsequently detachment starting from approximately 5 h APF, followed by fragmentation and debris clearance via phagocytes. Unlike any other anatomical software so far which often lack details and understanding of their importance, Animated Anatomy was created using the original Sobotta drawings and gave them a 3D form. Peripheral glia (red) wrap the soma, axon and also the proximal dendritic area in ddaC neurons. This model of mandible contains all the anatomical properties and shapes defined by Sobotta and Pernkopf. Here is an example of how detailed our 3D models are. A dendritic spine is a small membranous protrusion from a neurons dendrite that typically receives input from a single synapse of an axon. Dendritic arborization, also known as dendritic branching, is a multi-step biological process by which neurons form new dendritic trees and branches to create. Just as Scott reaches the top of the tree, an explosion rocks the ballroom and water rushes in. Scott addresses them all, stating that climbing represents their only chance to escape drowning as the ship continues to sink, but they side with the purser and refuse to leave. Before following Martin up the tree, Scott urges the ship's chaplain to join them, but the older man feels he must remain to comfort the others. Martin tries to convince the others to come along, but only Belle, Manny and Nonnie agree, although Belle is convinced she is too heavy to make it, and Nonnie is in mild shock. After the women remove their skirts, Robin, Susan, Linda and Mike climb the tree. Scott leads some men in righting the huge, ornamental Christmas tree, which has a strong inner skeleton that can act as a ladder, and Acres anchors it from above. Although Mike is reluctant to trust a child and chafes at Scott's officiousness, Linda insists that they go along. Robin, who has amassed copious data about the ship, informs them that the hull is thinnest near the propeller shaft, prompting Scott to announce that everyone must make their way toward the shaft. Martin and Scott determine, however, that because the boat is now upside down, any rescue team will have to come from above them through the hull, thus everyone is safer joining Acres at his higher vantage point. After Susan lands safely in the net, Acres, who sits on a high platform with an injured leg, also asks to jump. When Susan, trapped on a table, yells for help, Scott organizes the men to form a net out of a curtain and urges the terrified teenager to jump. Scott tries to help the wounded and Nonnie cradles the dead body of her beloved brother, as the purser announces that they must stay where they are and await help. Manny and Belle find each other, as do Linda and Mike. In the ensuing silence, the survivors rouse and search for their loved ones. Many people are killed or crushed under furniture, while others hang for their lives from the tables, which were bolted into the floor. In the ballroom, passengers are flung against the walls and slide down the floors to the ceiling, which is now below them. The force of the water turns the Poseidon onto its side and then, as everyone and everything inside the ship slides downward, the ship flips completely over. Just as midnight strikes and the ballroom erupts in celebration, an enormous wall of water slams into the ship. On the deck, meanwhile, Harrison learns of a subsea earthquake that is causing heavy swells nearby, and he and his crew wait tensely. At dinner, while Belle worries that Martin is lonely and urges him to find someone to marry, Susan develops a crush on Scott. Linda, a former prostitute, worries that others disdain her, and when Mike tries to calm her, they spar briefly, then embrace. That night is New Year's Eve, and the passengers prepare for the ballroom gala. Later, Scott delivers a guest sermon to the ship's passengers, preaching that God is not concerned with individuals, so everyone must have the tenacity and courage to solve his own problems. In the bar, singer Nonnie Parry rehearses her songs, watched appreciatively by a British waiter named Acres. While the passengers endure the turbulent seas, Harrison orders that they take on ballast but is forced to back down after Linarcos threatens to have him removed from command. In addition to Robin and his eighteen-year-old sister Susan, the ship's passengers include police detective Mike Rogo and his wife Linda, meek haberdasher James Martin, older Jewish couple Manny and Belle Rosen and Reverend Scott, an unorthodox, rebellious clergyman who has been banished to Africa by his church. When young Robin Shelby bursts into the cabin, he impresses Harrison with his fascination with and knowledge of the ship, but is ushered out to await a safer moment to take his tour of the bridge. Harrison argues with Linarcos, the representative of the consortium that now owns the ship, who is insisting that they carry on without ballast in order to make up lost time. Just before New Year's Eve, the ocean liner S.S. These efforts helped prevent needless disruptions. They interviewed patients about barriers to sleep, integrated SIESTA’s sleep-friendly nudges into the EHR, and taught physicians and nurses how to use the sleep-friendly tools in the computer system. In the January 2019 issue of the Journal of Hospital Medicine, Arora and colleagues describe their experiment, designed to measure the effects of SIESTA. “Efforts to improve patients’ sleep are not new, but they do not often stick because they rely on staff to remember to implement the changes,” said the study’s lead author Vineet Arora, MD, professor of medicine at the University of Chicago and an authority on optimizing patient care in teaching hospitals, including disrupted sleep. SIESTA uses “nudges” through the patients’ EHRs, urging doctors and nurses to avoid disruptions that are only minimally valuable, such as awakening patients overnight to measure their vital signs or to administer non-urgent medications. To ameliorate this problem, researchers at the University of Chicago Medicine designed a study known as SIESTA (Sleep for Inpatients: Empowering Staff To Act). This can cause grogginess, delirium and falls. Nighttime awakenings for various tests can disrupt sleep. Selective tinkering with the medical center’s electronic health records (EHR) system, plus a 20-minute presentation to doctors and nurses on the consequences of in-hospital sleep deprivation, was able to change the behavior of caregivers in ways that allowed more patients to sleep undisturbed through the night.Īlthough patients may spend much of their time sitting in a chair or recovering in bed, hospitalization is seldom restful.
